This 1994 Mercedes-Benz C280 is part of the owner’s personal vehicle collection. A new class of Mercedes-Benz arrived in 1994, the “C-Class.” When introduced, Mercedes had ambitious goals for the C-Class, set out to fulfill the desires of the consumer: “refined driving pleasure, impeccable craftsmanship and environmental concern.” The C-Class was touted to offer the most amenities and convenience compared to any other vehicle Mercedes had offered up to that point.
For the first year, the W202 chassis was offered as the C220 and C280, a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder and a 2.8-litre 6-cyinder respectively. Great success of the chassis eventually led to other power plant options including a supercharged 2.3-litre 4-cylinder, known as the Kompressor, and a massive 4.3-litre V8 fitted in the AMG. Typical to Mercedes, the W202 was a strictly rear-wheel-drive platform. Handling was greatly improved over previous Mercedes models with the addition of a new double-wishbone design to the front suspension and variation of Mercedes’ excellent multi-link rear suspension. Handling of the W202 inspires confidence with its agility and excellent communication of the road’s surface.
All this spirited driving can be done from a well-appointed interior cabin. Developed to reduce as much engine and road noise as possible and canvas the occupants in serenity, the C-Class also features a specially designed Bose 8-speaker stereo system. Note: The C-Class was originally manufactured and sold starting in May 1993, but as a 1994 model-year.
Andy’s Brilliant Emerald Metallic on tan 1994 C280 was sought out to be his new summer daily driver. A white 1999 C230 Kompressor has been in long-term family ownership and Andy developed an affinity for the body style. This low mileage C280 was found in New York city and after flying out to view the car, it passed Andy’s scrutiny test: a stately color combination, 6-cylinder powerplant, solid body, well-optioned interior, good service records and low mileage, the C280 has just over 39,000 miles currently.
Within a 24-hour period, Andy left Milwaukee, flew to New York, purchased the car and road tripped it all the way home, a nearly 900-mile trek! The C280 was originally sold in Northern Illinois before moving to the East Coast with its second owner. Andy has brought the car back to the Midwest where it is frequently driven in its original stomping grounds. The 2.8-litre inline-six offer plenty of power and torque and makes for a very relaxing and enjoyable ride. The excellent reliability and performance of the C280 coupled with heated front seats, cruise control, Bose stereo system and ample storage space has made for a perfect Emerging Classic daily driver.
